Although your infant may not be saying words at this phase, he is very attentive to the speech sounds he hears from other people who are speaking. Your baby enjoys listening to you “play with sounds” of language. Singing silly or familiar songs to your baby during daily routines like dressing and bathing is not only entertaining, but it will help him develop the foundations of spoken, and later written, language.

None

Step 1: Establish a routine with your baby and sing the same silly song every time you bathe him.

Step 2: One popular children’s song that is perfect for bath time is “This Is the Way We Wash Our Hands”:

This is the way we wash our hands,
Wash our hands, wash our hands.
This is the way we wash our hands,
On a cold and frosty evening.

Step 3: You can change the lyrics each time you wash a different body part:

This is the way we wash our toes,
Wash our toes, wash our toes.
This is the way we wash our toes,
On a cold and frosty evening.

Step 4: Singing and talking to your baby during pleasurable activities like bath time will let him know how important and special he is to you. You could even make up your own special song to share with your baby! He will love hearing your voice and listening to the speech sounds of your language.
