During these months, your child’s fine motor development greatly improves. Your child’s grip will become stronger. She will hold an object for longer periods of time and can also release or drop an object. Your child will develop the ability to turn objects over in order to explore them and to transfer objects from one hand to another. A favorite game during these months is “Fill and Dump”! It is these early experiences that prepare your child to have the fine motor and eye-hand coordination she will need later for drawing and writing. So, let your child play and explore!

Step 1: Provide a variety of materials that can fit into pots and pans.
Step 2: Let your child enjoy filling and dumping objects into different containers over and over again. This gives your infant the chance to practice fine motor skills such as grasping and releasing objects, exploring objects and transferring objects from hand to hand.
