Learning letter names and sounds takes lots of practice! In this musical activity, children will use musical plastic eggs to sing about letter names.
- plastic eggs that divide into two parts
- rice or beans
- packing tape
- marker
- 3” x 5” cards
Step 1: Place a small amount of rice or beans in a plastic egg. Tape the two parts together to make a noisy egg.
Step 2: Print one letter of your child’s name on each egg. Print the letters of your child’s name on 3” x 5” unlined cards, one letter per card.
Step 3: Give your child the card with the first letter of her name on it and see if she can match it to the correct letter on the egg. Tell your child:
This is the first letter of your name. This is the letter D. D is the first letter in your name. Show me the egg with the letter D.
Give your child a chance to find the letter. You might start with just two eggs at a time to choose from. Then say:
That’s right! This is the letter D. D is the first letter in your name. Let’s sing and shake the egg as we sing about the letter D.
Step 4: Sing the letter name and shake the egg to a tune of your choice.
You might sing:
D, D, D… D, D ,D, that’s the letter that I see!
D, D, D,…D, D, D, sing the letter name with me!
Step 5: Continue the musical game with the rest of the letters in your child’s name, or as long as your child is interested.
To make it easier, simply give your child lots of exposure to the letters in her name. Tell your child the letter name as you give her an egg. You might say:
This is the letter D. D is the first letter in your name. What letter is this? Touch the letter D. Let’s sing and shake the egg as we sing about the letter D.
Ask your child to name the letter as you give her an egg. Tell your child:
This is the first letter of your name. What letter is this? That’s right! This is the letter D. D is the first letter in your name. Let’s sing and shake the egg as we sing about the letter D.
