Being able to distinguish how objects are the same or are different is an important skill that children will need as they grow. One way to introduce same and different to babies is to talk about their toys. As your baby grows, this awareness to details will help your baby focus on pictures, letters and words in books.

A variety of your baby’s toys

Step 1: Encourage your baby to touch and hold one of his toys, such as a ball. Describe the ball to your baby. You might say:  “Look at this ball. The shape of this ball is round. It feels soft and squishy. The color of this ball is red like mommy’s shirt.”

Step 2: Encourage your baby to touch and hold a block. Describe the block to your baby. You might say:  “Look at this block. The shape of this block is square. It is hard. The color of this block is blue like your eyes.”

Step 3: Continue to describe the similarities and differences between toys as your baby explores.
