In this game, you can use names of favorite people, pets or things to introduce the idea that the words we say are made up of different parts. Action games are always great fun and are a good way to practice phonological awareness skills.

Step 1: Say a name of a family member, a pet or friend that has more than one syllable.

Step 2: As you say the name, stomp your feet to each word part. Repeat the name and the motion two or three times and see if your child joins in. For example, if you say “Mommy” or “Daddy”, stomp your feet two times like this:

Say this:                Mom……my                       Mom……my

Do this:                 Stomp…stomp                  Stomp…stomp

Say this:               Dad……dy                          Dad……dy

Do this:                Stomp…stomp                  Stomp…stomp

Remember that it doesn’t matter how many times your child stomps or if your child says the word with you. Your goal is to create a love for words by showing your child how much fun it is to say words to a simple beat.

Think of words that have more than two word parts and add a stomp for each part. For example you could say the word “broccoli” and stomp three times like this:

Say this:               broc……..co……..…li                          broc……..co……..…li

Do this:                Stomp…stomp…stomp                  Stomp…stomp…stomp
